What Are All on 4 Dental Implants?
As mentioned all-on-4 allows you to replace a full set of teeth using 4 titanium implants.
A single implant will not replace each individual tooth but instead hold your whole dental bridge and fixed prosthesis together.
Most of the time the implants will be placed more upright in the front and tilted in the back. This can allow your implant surgeon to place them further back in your mouth.
It also won’t tell you what implant system you are having, what abutments you will have. What your temporary teeth are made of or what your final prothesis will be made of.
Will you need your teeth extracted? Do you need any extra work done? Will you have all-on-4 on one jaw or both?
Two people could have the same treatment concept but the work that needs to be done could vary.
Who Can Have All on 4 Dental Implants?
You can have all-on-4 if you don’t have any teeth on the upper or lower jaw of your mouth.
Or you may have natural teeth on one arch but your dentist feels that they won’t last.
Here are some reasons why you may be suitable for all-on-4:
- No teeth on one or both jaws
- Have a few teeth that are loose
- Gum disease

There are many things your dentist will look at when determining if you are a candidate for all-on-4.
How much bone you have, your current teeth and gums. Your bite and if you smoke or have any health conditions.
Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t have dental implants. As long as your healthy enough you should be fine.
Your medical history, medications, bone and gum health still need to be assessed individually.
However your dentist may want to treat any conditions before placing your implants.
If you book an online initial consultation we can discuss your case with you and help plan your dental implant treatment.

What Happens During All on 4 Dental Implants?
As you can see there is more than one stage to the all-on-4 treatment.
Here is a general guide to the treatment process.
Online Consultation
Once you’ve booked your online consultation we will look at any previous x-rays and photos.
From this we can create a rough treatment plan for you. But won’t be able to make any final decisions until we have examined you in person.
Visit to the Clinic
We will examine your mouth and look at your current teeth and gums.
Check your bone structure and take any necessary panoramic X-rays, 3D CT scan imaging or a 3D CBCT scan.
Surgery
If you have any teeth left we may need to remove them. Your implants will be placed depending on what work was decided in your treatment plan.
The surgical procedure and implant placement will follow the plan confirmed by your dentist, adhering to standard practices in implantology.
You may also need extra work such as bone grafting or a sinus lift. This will be discussed with you prior to your procedure.
Temporary Teeth
If your implants are stable enough you can leave the same day with a set of temporary teeth.
As stated before your first set of teeth will most likely be temporary. They will be made to last you until your implants have healed.
If you can’t leave with teeth your dentist may give you other options, such as a temporary denture.
Healing
Your implants will need to heal and fuse with your jaw. This healing phase is known as osseointegration. According to NHS this healing period can take 2-6 months.
While you heal you may need to eat softer foods and not put too much pressure on your temporary teeth.
Your Final Prothesis
Once your implants have healed your final teeth can be made.
Your dentist will check your implants, how your bite feels and the fit of your bridge.
Ask whether the final fixed prosthesis will be acrylic, a zirconia bridge featuring individual zirconia crowns, ceramic or another design.
You may have to come back a few times until you’re happy with your teeth.

Will My Teeth Be Permanent?
No your teeth will not be permanent when you leave Turkey.
Your first set of teeth will be temporary and may need to be repaired. They will be designed to last until your implants have fused with your jaw.
Your final fixed bridge acting as your permanent teeth, which may feature zirconium crowns, will be made after your implants have healed. They will be made out of a different material and may need to be reinforced.
Make sure you ask what your temporary teeth are made of and what you can’t eat. Also ask when your final bridge will be made.
Do I Need a Bone Graft?
All-on-4 allows you to place your implants where you have more bone. Which can decrease the chance of needing a bone graft.
But if you have severe bone loss, low bone density or little to no bone you may still need to have one done, or consider an alternative like a zygomatic implant.
Your implant surgeon will be able to advise you on this.

How To Clean Your Teeth After All-on-4
Even though your teeth will be fixed to your implants you still need to clean under your teeth.
Your dentist will show you how to do this. You may need special tools to clean under your prothesis and maintain your oral hygiene.
Make sure you clean under your teeth every day. Have checkups with your dentist to make sure your bite is ok and your prosthetic teeth are secure.
This professional maintenance and daily cleaning can affect the long term success of your treatment.
Also be aware of any grinding you may be doing. Your dentist may suggest a mouth guard.
Make sure you know who will be looking after you once you’re back home. Don’t expect your UK dentist to know about your new teeth.
Coming Home From Turkey
For international patients using dental tourism and broader medical tourism services, aftercare should be planned before you return home.
Ask for any paperwork that can help you back in the UK.
This can include what implant you are having and what brand it is. Any x-rays and pictures. What your teeth are made of and how to clean them.
What to do if you have any problems and whether you receive a lifetime warranty.
When you will need to come back and who will pay for it if you do.
The GDC recommends that you look into the dentist and dental clinic you are having your treatment with. What happens if you have any problems and who will look after you when your back in the UK.
Pictures can only do so much. If you experience any pain, bleeding or swelling contact your dentist or nearest hospital.
All-on-4 vs All-on-6
With all-on-6 dental implants, instead of 4 implants you will be having 6 implants placed in your jaw.
This does not necessarily mean its better than all-on-4. It all depends on your jaw and what work needs to be done.
We will cover all-on-4 vs all-on-6 in more detail in our future blog post.
